Nintendo has confirmed that a successor to the Switch console will be announced during the fiscal year 2025. The surprise announcement was made during an investor meeting, and later Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa took to X (formerly Twitter) to confirm the existence of Switch 2, or whatever the company might end up calling it. Nintendo’s next-generation game console has been rumoured for months, with many speculating it to be a spiritual successor to the hit Switch with more processing power and better graphics.

Earlier this year, Nintendo reportedly told some game publishers that the Switch 2 would be delayed until the early months of 2025. It was said that the company was initially targeting a release of the console toward the end of this year but later pushed the release date to early 2025.
The current Switch is now nearly seven years old, but the hybrid console continues to sell well. In its latest earnings report for the fiscal year 2024, Nintendo revealed that it sold 15.70 million units of hardware between April 2023 and March 2024, bringing the lifetime sales to 141.32 million.
The Switch 2, the next version of its flagship gaming console as it is often dubbed on the internet, will reportedly feature a larger, 8-inch screen, supporting 1080p resolution, Joy-Cons that attach magnetically, backward compatibility for both games and controllers and dock that will use the same USB-C connection as the existing dock but support 4K display resolution.
Insiders claim that instead of a whole new console with a different form factor, Nintendo might opt for a straightforward follow-up to the Switch with largely the same feature sets and an extensive game library to cash in on the popularity of the existing hybrid form factor, which allows gamers to play games as a home console and on the go.
